The countdown to the biggest football tournament in the world has begun, and we've waited four years! Just to help kickstart the Word Cup soccer festival that is about to take the world by storm, I have compiled a list of 15 interesting facts about this year’s Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup to be hosted by Russia. 1. Russia was given the rights to host the FIFA World Cup for the very first time in its history. This historical moment took place on December 2, 2010. The matches will kick off on June 14, 2018 with the finals taking place on July 15, 2018. 2. This will be Russia’s 11 th  appearance in the World Cup. 3. Russia’s highest ever finish in the FIFA World Cup is the 4 th  position in the 1966 World Cup. 4. This will be the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted in Europe since 2006 and the first time ever a World Cup is hosted in Eastern Europe. 5.            ARGENTINA has the oldest average age(28.4 yrs), while GHANA has the youngest(24.9 yrs).

2. Most foreign-based stars

           URUGUAY, IVORY COAST, BOSNIA & GHANA have the most foreign based players(22) in their squad while RUSSIA have the least with zero.

3. 15% players are from EPL

           Almost 15 percent of the 736 players selected ply their trade in the EPL

          Debutants BOSNIA have the most experienced squad with an average of 60 caps per player, while ALGERIA with 15.1, has the squad with the fewest international appearences.

5. Youngest players is 18

       The youngest player selected is Cameroon forward Fabrice Olinga who turned 18 on May 12.

6. Oldest players are 43 and 38

        COLOMBIA have the 2 oldest players reserve goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, who will turn 43 during the group phase of the tournament and defender Mario Yepes, who is 38.

7. KLOSE one short of history

         GERMENY's Miroslav Klose is one goal short of BRAZIL striker Ronaldo's all time World Cup scoring record of 15.

8. It's Buffon's fifth World Cup

          ITALY goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon joins Mexico's Antonio Carbajal  and German Lothar Matthaeus in being selected for five World Cups.

9. Forster is the tallest

         England's Fraser Forster is the tallest player standing at 6 foot 7 inches.
