There is something magical about seeing colorful hot air balloons
fill the sky. If you are in the south west of England this summer, don’t
miss the Bristol International Balloon
Fiesta, at Ashton Court Estate at 10 am on 13 August, 2017. Now
in its 39th year since Europe’s largest annual meeting of hot air balloons
draws thousands of spectators, who come to see the stunning dawn and dusk mass
ascents and night glows.
Each summer, more than 800 writers and thinkers from across the
globe gather in Scotland’s capital for the Edinburgh
Book Festival. This year’s festival takes place from 12-28 August, in
parallel with the Edinburgh International Festival.
Set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a highlight of the Scottish
calendar. Every year around 220,000 people come to watch the stunning display
of military pageantry, performed by bands from the British Armed Forces, the
Commonwealth, and military teams from around the globe.
The oldest and biggest annual sailing regatta in the world, Cowes Week is a highlight of the
British sporting calendar. It is taking place on the Solent in the
stretch of water between southern England and the Isle of Wight. This year’s
event runs from 29 July to 5 August.
The Great British Beer
Festival turns 40 this year, so if you are in the UK capital from 8-12
August, come along to London’s Olympia exhibition centre and raise a glass to
celebrate. There will of course be a wide range of quality real ale to
sample, from mellow session beers to strong IPAs and international craft beers.
Edinburgh International Festival is the biggest annual performing arts
festival in the UK. Founded in 1947, it brings together some of the most
exciting creative artists working in the world today, from contemporary and
classical music to theater, opera, dance, and visual art. This year’s
event runs from 4 to 28 August.
Notting Hill is one of London’s most prestigious and
expensive neighbourhoods, made famous by the Richard Curtis film that takes its name, and is populated by
wealthy bankers and politicians. But for two days every August
Bank Holiday it goes back to its roots, when up to two million revellers
descend on the district along with nearby Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne
Park for Europe's biggest street party and a celebration of Caribbean culture, community, tradition, food
and music. This year Notting Hill Carnival is
celebrated on August 27.
Herstmonceux Castle, near Hastings in the south of England
is the setting for the annual England's
Medieval Festival which this year takes place from 26-28
August. The festivities start with a colourful costumed parade,
accompanied by drummers and giant carnival puppets. This is then followed by a
huge medieval battle, when more than 500 people from re-enactment groups around
Europe stage the battle of the Houses of York and Lancaster, complete
with volleys of arrows and cannon fire. The main attraction is the royal arena, a large roped-off
area of a field, which hosts jousting tournaments and falconry displays at
specified times during each day.
TV chef Jamie Oliver and Alex James will once again be
hosting The Big Feastival on
Alex's idyllic farm in the Cotswolds. Held over three days from
25-27 August, it promises a weekend celebration of music, food and
family fun. Demos start in the display kitchens at 11.30am on Friday
morning and 10.30am on Saturday and Sunday and fill up fast, so get
there early if you want a good seat.
When it comes to ‘must-do’
international events, it's highly probable that the quirky World Bog Snorkelling Championship
is not even on your radar. Yet this offbeat sporting event, which
takes place every summer in
Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid Wales, is actually one definitely not
to be missed. This year's fixture is on Sunday, 27 August.
